Dr Mohamed AtallaMBBS, MS, MD, FRACS
I am a certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). Having completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), I went on to start specialist surgical training in Australia with the Royal College of Surgeons. I obtained my FRACS qualification in 2015 specialising in General Surgery. Subsequently, I was selected for a competitive, accredited post fellowship position in Auckland, New Zealand, and trained in the subspecialty of bariatric surgery. Having seized this opportunity overseas, I have gained a wide variety of operative and clinical experience. During this time, I have refined my complex surgical and diagnostic/therapeutic expertise in both upper gastrointestinal/bariatric weight loss surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures. My special interest is bariatric weight loss surgery and I have several years of experience with minimally invasive laparoscopic and open abdominal procedures.
I perform a broad range of general and bariatric surgery as well as endoscopic procedures. In both Australia and overseas, I have trained extensively in this field. With regards to Bariatric Surgery, my special area of interest, I perform procedures such as gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding, intra-gastric balloon and duodenal switch. I have experience in revisional weight loss surgery including conversion of adjustable gastric band to either sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. The majority of surgery is performed laparoscopically or endoscopically. Once patients have lost weight, they often require removal of loose skin and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can be offered. My general surgical areas of interest include different types of hernia repair, cholecystectomy, fundoplication, appendectomy, breast, colorectal surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy.
If your BMI is over 40, or you have a BMI over 35 with associated obesity related disorders (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, arthritis) the Australian National Health & Medical Research Council recommends weight loss surgery be considered. I am committed to promoting disease resolution through minimally invasive weight loss surgery in the most comfortable and safe environment possible. Education and a solid support system, from the first consultation to follow-up care, is essential to providing obese patients the assistance they need as they embark on a new path toward a healthier, happier lifestyle. If you have any queries regarding evidence- based weight loss surgery, please contact our team for a comprehensive consultation. I am available by appointment monthly at Coffs Harbour. Both Dr Andrew Ramsay and I are dedicated to making your weight loss journey an uncomplicated and successful one, and along with other specialists will guide you through all aspects of weight loss surgery.
